Around 60 foreign correspondents from 15 countries and 260 domestic reporters will attend a ceremony to mark 35th anniversary of Vietnam's Southern Liberation Day (April 30). Tran Quang Dung, Head of Ho Chi Minh Municipal Department of External Affairs said that 28 international guests from 13 countries and 2 delegations from Laos and Cambodia have registered to participate in the opening ceremony. Quang Tri holds requiem for fallen soldiers


More than10,000 tombs in the Truong Son national cemetery for fallen soldiers was lit by candles as part of the requiem on April 24. The event was held by the Quang Tri provincial Women's Union to mark the 35 th anniversary of Southern Liberation Day (April 30). Local leaders, together with 500 women, representing the Union attended the incense offering ceremony and a cultural programme in honouring the fallen soldiers. After that, monks from the provincial Buddhist Sangha organised ritual services for the dead. Students hold football tourney in Moscow

Sixteen teams of Vietnamese students who are studying at more than 30 universities and colleges in Moscow entered the final round of a football tournament on April 24. The opening game saw the fierce competition between Cup defenders Moscow Energy Institute and their rivals Obolen. Vu Ngoc Minh, a Moscow Energy Institute student, said such a tournament is very useful as it helps connect all Vietnamese students at training institutions in Moscow together. "More importantly, we have the chance to meet and share experiences, and we hope more similar events will be held in the future," Minh said. Since its first debut in 1997, the tournament has been held annually by the Vietnam Students Association in Moscow to maintain physical exercises among Vietnamese students and promote exchanges between universities in the capital. Requiem for war martyrs on Truong Sa island

A requiem will be held on Truong Sa island district on April 28 to pay tribute to and honour soldiers who laid down their lives for national liberation and unification. The Khanh Hoa provincial Buddhist Sangha's Executive Council says it will hold the mass at 08.00 hrs as part of activities to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Truong Sa's Liberation Day (April 29) and Southern Liberation Day (April 30). The event will also mark the 55th anniversary of the Vietnam People's Navy. These activities are being carried out by the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies from April 24-28. Southern Liberation Day introduced in Egypt

The Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt held a press conference on April 22 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the liberation of South Vietnam. The conference was attended by representatives from other embassies, Egyptian reporters and those interested in Vietnam. It began with a documentary illustrating the Vietnamese tanks smashing down the gate of the Presidential Palace and the Vietnamese flag flying high on the rooftop of the Saigon puppet regime's building on April 30, 1975, marking the success of the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign. Vietnam Airlines continues fare discounts to stimulate tourism


The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has said the company will continue to offer discounted airfares for tour operators participating in its tourism stimulus programme. The round-trip ticket price for Ho Chi Minh City-Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City-Vinh, Hanoi-Can Tho or Hanoi-Buon Ma Thuot is VND1.8 million. Ho Chi Minh City-Da Nang-Hue round-trip ticket is only VND1.2 million. To qualify for the discounted price, a tour operator has to book tickets 15 days in advance for a group of at least 10 passengers. Vietnamese abroad welcome lunar New Year


The Vietnamese embassies in France and Japan held ceremonies on February 10 to welcome the lunar New Year (the Year of the Tiger). In France, a gathering took place at the Vietnamese Embassy where Vietnamese expatriates recalled sweet memories of that homeland and enjoyed a warm atmosphere of family reunion. Phuong Lan, a Vietnamese residing in France, confided: "Every year, I attend the ceremony to celebrate the lunar New Year at the Vietnamese Embassy in France. HCM City’s CPI rises 0.58 percent in May

The consumer priceindex (CPI) of Ho Chi Minh City rose by 0.58 percent in May from the previous month and by 2.47 percent compared with early this year, reported the municipal statistics office. The increase has been found in a wide range of commodities. Those with the highest rises include transport and postal and telecommunications services (2.08 percent), housing, water and electricity supplies and construction material (1.37 percent), and household appliances (1.17 percent). Other groups of goods and services have seen slight rises in prices, such as food (0.04 percent), and drinks and tobacco (0.48 percent). The prices of cultural and tourism products alone dropped by 0.14 percent. The local statistics office said the purchasing power in May has increased considerably as a result of various promotional campaigns and a long holiday, which included May Day and Southern Liberation Day (April 30). State Vice President receives Chinese war veterans

State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan on May 5 met with a Chinese delegation of former military consultants and war veterans visiting Vietnam during celebrations of the 55th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory and the 34th anniversary of Southern Liberation Day. Nghe An helps build school in Lao province

A delegation from the central Vietnamese province of Nghe An has handed over a two-storey school with classrooms and laboratories to the northeastern Lao province of Xieng Khouang, said Thai Van Hang, Vice Chairman of the Nghe An provincial People's Committee. The school, located in the Lao province's capital town, Phonsavan, is in a Laotian architectural style and cost more than VND3.5 billion. Bahamas cruise ship brings visitors to Nha Trang

The Bahamas flagship Legend of the Seas anchored at Nha Trang port on May 1, bringing nearly 1,600 visitors and crewmen to the central coastal tourist city. Khanh Hoa reduces jail terms for 299 prisoners

The People's Court of the central province of Khanh Hoa on April 29 announced a decision to reduce the sentences of 299 prisoners who have behaved well during their service on the occasion of Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1). Of the total, some have been freed while others have had their terms commuted by between 3-6 months. Earlier on April 28, the provincial People's Court also announced a decision to reduce jail terms for 20 prisoners who have performed well at the provincial police's detention camp. Hoi An’s Old Quarter Night to be launched

Hoi An City's People's Committee, Quang Nam province, will launch an event, "Night in the Old Quarter", on April 30 th 2009 to mark the Southern Liberation Day and International Labour Day. During the "Night in the Old Quarter", power will be turned off along two banks of the Hoai River from 7pm to 9pm, and the whole quarter will become pedestrian area. National cycling tournament to begin on April 22

A national cycling tournament will be held from April 22-30 to mark the 34th anniversary of Southern Liberation Day (April 30). Starting from Ho Chi Minh City, cyclists will ride their bikes through Phan Thiet, Phan Rang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Bao Loc and back to HCM City, a total of 950km. Vietnam Airlines increases flights from April 29 to May 3


The nation's flagship carrier, Vietnam Airlines, plans to increase flights from Hanoi and HCM City to other cities and provinces throughout the country to meet the demand for traveling for celebrations of Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1). Vietnamese in Russia holds table-tennis tourney

A table-tennis tournament was held at the Pokrovka club in Moscow on March 29, drawing nearly 50 Vietnamese diplomats, businesspeople and students living in Russia.
