Hanoi honours handicrafts villages, artisans The Hanoi People's Committee honoured three traditional handicraft villages and 19 artisans on April 16. They have contributed to preserving and expanding traditional occupations, creating jobs and increasing income for local people, thus helping socio-economic development in the city. They are the Banh Trung Tranh Khuc village in Thanh Tri district, Van Lang Village making fishing nets in Phu Xuyen district and Ngoc Than woodwork village in Quoc Oai district. Nguyen Phuong Quang, born 1984, is the youngest craftsman to receive the title artisan this time. He is the third generation in a family working in rattan weaving in Chuong My district. Quang's grandfather was recognised as an artisan in 1961, and his father was honoured in 2009. By this year, Hanoi has honoured 277 craft villages and 135 artisans. The capital this year will focus on further developing tourism products to attract more domestic and foreign visitors, according to the local Culture, Sports and Tourism Department. During a conference on plans for Ha Noi and Viet Nam tourism development held on Tuesday, the department said tourism products were still limited due to delays in official approval. Deputy head of the department, Truong Minh Tien, said they have been collecting opinions on developing and exploiting tourism from related enterprises and sectors. The department is expected to submit its plan to the People's Committee of Ha Noi for approval by June, Tien said. Under the plan, Ha Noi would develop the Thang Long Citadel, Dong Ngac Village, the Ba Vi tourism area, the Old Quarter, theatres and other existing tourism sites. Northwestern Cultural Colors in Hanoi

Vietnamese students football tourney held in Moscow

A football tournament for the Vietnamese students in the summer of 2011 wrapped up in Moscow on June 12. Vietnamese student football tournament opens in Moscow The event attracted 15 football teams from 40 universities that have Vietnamese alumni. The Bauman Moscow State Technical University won the trophy, the Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University placed second and the Vietnamese Association of Fellow-Countryman Grup came in third. The 2011 Hue Traditional Crafts Festival opened at the Ngo Mon Square in Hue City on April 30 to celebrate the Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and International May Day. Addressing the opening ceremony, Phan Trong Vinh, Chairman of the Hue municipal People's Committee, said the festival, under the theme of "Vietnamese Gastronomy in the Tranquility of Hue's gardens", aims to introduce cuisine and bonsai, both integral to Hue's identity. It is also a chance to honour artisans who are preserving the country's traditional crafts, particularly in Hue. Visitors to the festival can enjoy sophisticated dishes that were once served at the royal court as well as vegetarian fare from across the country in a traditional garden setting. The Overseas Vietnamese in Cambodia held a ceremony on April 29 to mark the 36th anniversary of Southern Liberation Day (April 30). Addressing the ceremony, Tran Van Toi, President of the Overseas Vietnamese in Phnom Penh, stressed the need to promote revolutionary tradition and the glorious spirit of Southern Liberation Day. Tourists flock to central region

The number of tourists to the central region on the occasion of Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and May Day has increased remarkably against the previous years. In the coastal areas of Da Nang city, Cua Dai in Hoi An ancient town, Lang Co beach in Thua Thien Hue province, some hotels have been fully booked. Especially, nearly 6,000 visitors have registered for visiting Cu Lao Cham island, up four times compared to normal days. To meet the visitors' demand for accommodation and travel, Hoi An city's Department of Trade and Tourism in the central Quang Nam province have put more than 60 high-speed ferries and boats into operation. As the four-day long holiday coincides with the international fireworks festival, the number of visitors to Da Nang city is expected to increase by 20 percent from a year earlier, and five times compared to normal days.
