Haydn masterpiece to be sung in HCM City The oratorio The Creation, written by Joseph Haydn, a prominent Austrian composer of the 18th and early 19th century, will be performed at the HCM City Opera House on May 8 and 9. Considered to be one of the composer's masterpieces, the oratorio tells the story of God's creation of the world in six days as it is related in the Book of Genesis of the Old Testament. The classical orchestral work is structured in three parts and is scored for soprano, tenor and baritone soloists as well as a chorus. The performance, to be directed by well-known Norwegian conductor Lars Notto Birkeland, will feature international opera singers, including soprano Cho Hae Ryong, tenor Erlend Tvinnereim, baritone Halvor F. Melien, and the HCM City symphony orchestra and choir. Birkeland will play the harpsichord during the singers' recitatives. Nearly 200,000 sets of remains of martyrs found

PANO - Over the past 20 years, nearly 200,000 sets of remains of Vietnamese martyrs have been found in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, Le Kha Phieu, former General-Secretary wrote in a congratulation letter to the Research Center for Human Potential. The Centre, under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, held a get-together to review 20 years of seeking sets of remains of martyrs with special methods on January 23 rd in Hanoi. According to Major-General, Dr. Nguyen Chu Phac, from the Centre, different ESP practitioners have used their extra-sensory perception to search for sets of remains of martyrs. Attentively, some young ESP practitioners, including Le Trung Tuan and Nguyen Thi Thanh, have had rapid and precise results in seeking remains. 7,000 sets of remains discovered by ESP

Uruguayan guitar duo perform in Hanoi

Uruguay's guitar duo Umbral staged a special performance in Hanoi on April 21. The event, hosted by the Uruguayan Embassy in Hanoi, drew the participation of representatives from the embassies of the Latin American and European countries such as Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Spain. Great Patriotic War Victory marked in Hanoi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh attended a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War hosted by embassies of Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in Vietnam on May 6. Addressing the event, the Deputy PM said the victory, in which the former Soviet Union played a decisive role, was a significant milestone for humankind. He stated that the entire global community is responsible for treasuring the value and preventing similar war disasters from harming future generations. Vietnamese Embassy holds banquet for Cuban friends

Commando recalls sinking of US aircraft carrier

Seventy-nine-year-old former Vietnamese commando Lam Son Nao still feels uncomfortable whenever he thinks about the moment he tried to recover 84 kilos of explosives that had been left near the USNS Core aircraft carrier. Recalling the event of 52 years ago during a recent interview at his home in HCM City, Nao said he first conducted a feasibility study for the attack by inspecting a two kilometre-long sewer tunnel three times before he and his comrade Nguyen Van Cay were approved to proceed with the mission. They later set the explosives to go off at 7pm on December 29, 1963, but they failed to detonate because of a weak battery. Nao then decided to return to the aircraft carrier to retrieve the explosives. "At that time, I thought of two situations. First, I thought if I touched it, it would explode.
