Vietnam Party official to lose war honors for lying

The Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam has asked that a former chief of the Thua Thien-Hue Province Party Unit have his war honors revoked in light of recent findings that he had fabricated his wartime achievements, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported Friday. The order followed an investigation by the Party's Central Inspection Committee into the accusations by a group of veterans. They said Ho Xuan Man lied about his accomplishments in Phong Dien District between 1964 and 1975 during the Vietnam War, in order to get the title of People's Armed Forces Hero in August 2010, one month before his retirement. The inspection committee told a meeting at the Thua Thien-Hue Party Committee office with three of the accuserson January 2 that its investigation found that Man had been dishonest concerning eight of his 17 achievements. The Hero of the People's Armed Force is normally awarded to individuals with " exceptionally outstanding achievements in combat, combat service and work, represent the revolutionary heroism in the cause of national liberation, national defense and the protection the people". Ho Xuan Man was awarded with the title in 2010 after he submitted a claim, which included a number of documents that attested to his accomplishments in Phong Dien District between the years of 1964 and 1975. The Thua Thien-Hue Province Party Unit is investigating an accusation by a group of veterans that a former provincial Party chief made false claims about his wartime achievements to get an award, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper has reported. Ho Xuan Man was awarded the title of People's Armed Forces Hero in 2010 after he made a claim along with documents about 17 accomplishments in Phong Dien District between 1964 and 1975 during the Vietnam War, which ended in April 1975. Vietnamese and Laotian provinces improve ties

PANO - A high-ranking delegation, led by Khamphoi Butdavieng, Governor of the SekongProvince in Laos, had a working visit to the central province of Thua Thien - Hue. Mr. Ho Xuan Man, the Thua Thien-Hue Provincial Party Committee Secretary, met with the Laotian delegation and the two sides reviewed activities and programs carried out by the two provinces over the past years. In 2009, the Vietnamese province offered 60 tonnes of rice and VND 100 million to help the Laotian province overcome the aftermath of storms. The two provinces also reviewed their border cooperation, such as the building of the Ta Vang check point and a road, at a cost of VND 3.1 billion by Thua Thien - Hue, for the Laotian province. Thua Thien-Hue assists Lao province

A Party official of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has committed to helping the Lao province of Xekong to develop in a comprehensive way. The commitment was made during the talks between Secretary of the Thua Thien-Hue Provincial Party Committee Ho Xuan Man and visiting Xekong Party Committee Secretary and Governor Khampheuy Boudavieng in the former imperial city of Hue on August 5. Beginning in 2010, Thua Thien-Hue will provide 10 full scholarships for Lao students to study in Hue every year. New Vietnam-Laos border marker inaugurated

The central province of Thua Thien Hue inaugurated marker 666 at the A Dot-Ta Vang border gate, a major marker on the Vietnam-Laos border line, at a ceremony on May 18. The marker is among 26 new border markers to be erected along the 26km common border between Thua Thien-Hue province and Sekong province. Fishermen leave houseboats to live on land

More than 500 households who lived on house boats around central HueCity have stepped ashore to live on dry land as part of a Government-backed resettlement project. Nguyen Cu from Lai Tan village said that moving ashore had been a dream of many generations of fishing villagers for years: "It is difficult for villagers to make ends meet, not to mention the prospect of house ownership," he said. The Thua Thien-Hue provincial authorities had previously tried to entice villagers to move ashore two times, but had failed both times due to lack of research and long-term planning, according to Nguyen Van Cuong from the provincial People's Council. He said, people had returned to their ships because they lacked work opportunities after resettling. But this time a comprehensive resettlement programme, covering poverty reduction, vocational training and job creation, had been planned to move all fishing villagers ashore. Pham Quang Nghi, Politburo Member, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee on December 23 visited 85 year-old Catholic hero mother Dang Thi Nhung whose only son is a martyr. Mrs. Nhung now lives in a house of 'affection and gratitude' in Dong Da district. Living together with her in the house is Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoi, 91 years of age, who is a martyr's wife. Secretary Pham Quang Nghi presented gifts to mother Dang Thi Nhung and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoi on the occasion of Christmas and wished them good health. Thua Thien-Hue helps build school in Laos

Central Thua Thien-Hue province has donated 30 million Lao kip (approximately 3,200 USD) to Laos to help build a school in the country's Salavan province. The money was handed over by the provincial Party Committee's Secretary Ho Xuan Man during his recent working visit to Laos's Attapu and Salavan provinces. The new school's roll will feature over 100 overseas Vietnamese students that call Laos home as well as local students. President Nguyen Minh Triet toured four central coastal provinces on January 29-30, wishing local residents a happy new year and presented gifts to them on the occasion of the forthcoming Tet festival. Evacuations are well underway in Vietnam's central provinces in the direct path of Typhoon Kai Tak, feared the most massive to slam into the region in the last ten years. Meanwhile, one pregnant woman died and two others were injured in Quang Ngai province as a tree fell in heavy winds. Gusts, huge waves and torrential rains also entirely brought down two houses, damaging five others. Five communes meet standards of new rural areas

Nhan Dan - Four communes in the central highlands province of Lam Dong and one in the northern province of Bac Giang were recognised as new rural areas on February 18. The four communes which met all 19 criteria for the rural building programme in Lam Dong province include Tan Hoi in Duc Trong district, Xuan Truong in Da Lat city and Quang Lap and Lac Lam in Don Duong district. In 2013, Lam Dong province built 229 kilometres of roads, 558 metres of bridges and 284 sewers were upgraded and repaired; important achievements in the building of new rural areas movement. By the end of last year, 18 communes in the province fulfilled 15 - 18 criteria, 43 communes met 10 - 14 criteria and 53 communes reached 5 - 9 criteria. The Song Mai commune is the first one in Bac Giang province to reach all 19 criteria to become a new style rural area. Vietnam halts New Model University Project

Vietnam will surprising not co-operate with any foreign governments to open more universities until at least 2020 according to a new decision by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. The PM requested a focus on developing the existing two national universities in Hanoi and HCM City into leading universities which will gradually reach regional and world standards. Students taking part in the entrance exam at the Vietnam National University-Hanoi in July 2015. The PM also said the three existing universities in the New Model University Project including the Vietnamese-German University, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and the Vietnam-Japan University needed to be developed into world-class universities. Diplomatic sector’s birthday marked abroad

Vietnamese embassies around the world have organised various activities to celebrate the 70th founding anniversary of the country’s diplomatic sector (August 28). At a meeting in Berlin on August 28, Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Nguyen Thi Hoang Anh reviewed outstanding achievements the sector has gained in political, economic, trade and investment ties with countries, territories and regional and international organisations.
