UK town marks link to President Ho

NEWHAVEN (VNS)— If you were to think of the places associated with the life of late President Ho Chi Minh, you probably would not consider the small British seaside town of Newhaven. However, the town does indeed have a significant link with the founder of modern Viet Nam, which it celebrated on Sunday along with representatives from the Vietnamese Embassy to the UK. The ceremony on May 19 coincided with both the 100th anniversary of President Ho's first arrival in the UK and his 123rd birthday. And the connection? According to a Sussex professor and a local council chairman, Ho Chi Minh may once have worked as a pastry chef on the cross-channel ferry service between the French town of Dieppe and Newhaven following World War I. The ceremony started with the handover of a bronze statue of President Ho, weighing about 120kg, to the Newhaven Museum. Vietnam Government assures religious freedom

(VOV) - A review conference of the Ordinance of Religions and Beliefs took place on Monday in Ho Chi Minh city. Present were representatives from the Ministry of Interior, the Government's Committee for Religious Affairs and religious dignitaries in the southern provinces and cities. The Ordinance of Religions and Beliefs was promulgated in June, 2004 and has taken effect since November 15 of the same year. According to Head of the Government's Committee for Religious Affairs Pham Dung, the ordinance has now come to fruition. Most religious dignitaries and followers and many international organizations have praised the revised policies of the Party and State towards religions. President of the French Research Institute for Development to visit Vietnam from May 22-24

(CPV) - Within the framework of the Franco-Vietnamese scientific cooperation, Mr Michel Laurent, President of the French Research Institute for Development (IRD) will visit Vietnam from May 22-24. He will attend the launch of the European project NOPOOR Vietnam, visit the International Joint Laboratory RICE, and meet the Presidents of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, and the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences to discuss collaborative research activities. Led by the IRD, the European project NOPOOR "Enhancing knowledge for renewed policies against poverty" involves more than one hundred researchers from 20 universities and research institutions in 17 countries on four continents for a period of 5 years. It is the largest research program funded by the EU dedicated to the fight against poverty in developing countries for the coming years. Visiting Uncle Ho’s mother’s village

(VOV) - Hoàng Trù or Chùa village, the home village of President Ho Chi Minh's mother, is the place where he was born. Hoàng Trù village is located in Kim Liên commune, Nam Đàn district, Nghệ An province, about 15 km west of Vinh city. The Hoàng Trù relic site is associated with the birthplace of Uncle Ho, his childhood and stories about his parents. The relic complex includes the house of Uncle Ho's maternal grandparents Hoàng Đường and Nguyễn Thị Kép, a house to worship the Hoàng Xuân clan, and the house of Uncle Ho's parents Nguyễn Sinh Sắc and Hoàng Thị Loan. The 3500m2 complex is typical for Vietnamese rural areas. A revision to the decentralisation policy for foreign direct investment would enhance development, some authorities argue The ministry will ask the Vietnamese government to allow it and other related ministries to appraise foreign direct investment (FDI) projects granted with special incentives, acquiring large chunks of land or those affect the nation's economy, before proposing the prime minister for in-principle approval, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment's (MPI) Foreign Investment Agency (FIA).
