2013 National Springboard Championship kicks off


PANO - The 2013 National Springboard Championship took place on August 28th at the Hanoi National Sports Complex, with the participation of athletes from nationwide. The five-day event is a chance for the General Department of Sports and Physical Training to assess its coaches and athletes, as well as to select outstanding athletes for the national springboard team. The 1st National Springboard Championship was held in 2004 with only 21 athletes from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Haiphong. Ho Chi Minh Museum receives 229 artifacts, documents and images on Uncle Ho


(Cinet)- On August 27, Ho Chi Minh Museum - HCMC branch held a ceremony to receive 229 artifacts, documents and images from 21 organizations and individuals on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the August Revolution, National Day and 44 years of Ho Chi Minh's testament. The event is the result of a campaign of collecting artifacts related to the late President that the museum launched on September 02, 2010. Until now, the museum has received nearly 700 artifacts from the public. On the same day, the museum also opened the exhibition "Simple and valuable examples of Ho Chi Minh" and "Uncle Ho's Monument in the South." Robust growth of sport utility vehicles


According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufactures' Association (VAMA), sales of sport utility vehicles and passenger cars had double-digit growths in the country in July, which contributed to a higher monthly sales than expected. The market was in particular boosted by strong demand for SUVs and MPVs, although sales of trucks plunged. During the month, without having more new launch, the market sold a total of 3,959 cars, increasing 2% and 5,401 light trucks and pickups, decreasing 7% compared to last month. Sales of locally assembled vehicles continued to increase to 7,676 units, up 3%, while sales of imported cars fell 24%. The total car sales reached 9,630 vehicles in July which is the fourth consecutive month with the sales higher than the same month last year. Ha Noi student wins eco-diary contest An eighth grader from the Ha Noi-based Doan Thi Diem Secondary High School, Ngo Hai Anh, grabbed first prize in the Eco Picture Diary Contest 2013, earning her the shot at taking part in the Global Award Ceremony in Paris, France, late this year. Launched globally by Panasonic Corporation in 2009, the third contest in Viet Nam drew participation from 530 students from primary schools in Ha Noi and central Quang Nam Province. The theme of the third contest focused on practical solutions to promoting green living, such as organising "green journeys" with friends, using public and green means of transport, planting trees, saving electricity, water and reusing materials. VietJet Air to open four more flight routes

On August 27, low-cost carrier VietJet Air announced its plan to open four additional flight routes.

Accordingly, from now to the end of 2013, VietJet Air will operate the Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC) - Hue, HCMC - Quy Nhon, Hanoi - Buon Ma Thuot, and Hanoi - Hue flight routes. The flight routes will provide additional 12,600 seats per week. Specifically, the HCMC - Hue route will be re-operated on September 20, the day when Phu Bai Airport re-opens, with 14 round trip flights a week. The Hanoi - Buon Ma Thuot and Hanoi - Hue routes will be launched on October 15, while the launching of the HCMC - Quy Nhon will be held on November 1. Over 200 Ho Chi Minh-related artefacts donated

The Ho Chi Minh Museum in the city of the same name held a ceremony on August 27 to receive 229 items, documents and photos relating to late President Ho Chi Minh. Among the noteworthy artifacts are a Movado watch that the President gifted to Justice Minister Vu Dinh Hoe in 1957, a Hero pen given to former Deputy Head of the Railway Administration Le Minh Duc in 1958 and five portraits of Ho Chi Minh drawn by prisoners at Con Dao prison from 1964 to 1971. Major foreign retailers target Vietnam consumer market

Vietnam could become a "blue ocean" destination for major retailers in Thailand and the region wanting to cash in on the country's nascent retail market, The Nation reports. Berli Jucker earlier this year acquired a 65-per-cent stake in Thai An, which operates 41 "B's mart" convenience stores in Ho Chi Minh City. The company opened three more B's mart stores this month and plans to have 61 stores in this city by the end of the year. About 100 new B's mart stores will open next year, and the company aims to have 300 in the Vietnamese capital and other major cities by 2015. Japanese retailer Aeon has also recently opened its national headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City and is planning many retail formats in the country, including convenience stores, shopping centres and supermarkets. Siemens and a group of cities leading the charge on Climate Change Action(C40) has published a list of 29 cities, including Ho Chi Minh city (Vietnam), nominated as finalists to compete in 10 categories of the for the 1st City Climate Leadership Awards. The C40 City Climate Leadership Awards will be granted annually in ten categories and will offer global recognition for C40 Cities that are demonstrating climate action leadership. Five award categories, including urban transportation, waste management and sustainable communities, are open to C40 cities network only. August CPI soars 0.83 percent

(CPV) - The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August surged 0.83 percent from July and 7.5 percent over a year previous, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

Nguyen Duc Thang, Head of the GSO's Price Statistics, said that the sharp CPI rise in August resulted from petrol and oil price, rainstorm and health-care service. However, the figure of 0.83 percent was much higher than the forecast of credit organisations through the State Bank of Vietnam's Monetary Statistics and Forecast Department. In addition, price hikes in the two big hubs of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city affected the country's common CPI. In Hanoi, prices of health-care service rocketing up 63.94 percent resulted in a 5.09 percent rise in the country's sector, the largest hike in August. Transport group ranked second, up 1.11 percent from the same month last year. Restaurant and food service, which make up the largest proportion of any commodity group within the CPI calculation, only saw a 0.54 percent rise from July. Vietnam Airlines adds up to around 285,620 seats over National Day

(CPV) - The Vietnam national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines on August 26 announces that it will add up to around 285,620 seats (including normal and additional seat) in flights during this National Day holiday period. In order to meet the increasing demand of passengers, between August 30 - September 3, the Airlines plans to operate additional flights on 10 routes, including Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh city - Hanoi, Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh city - Dong Hoi/Da Nang/Nha Trang/Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh city - Da Lat routes. Notably, Hanoi - Dong Hoi/Phu Quoc- Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city- Dong Hoi/Nha Trang/Ho Chi Minh city routes are expected to see a 70-100% increase from normal demand. Northwest Steering Committee tours Lai Chau


The northwestern province of Lai Chau has so far this year met or surpassed the targets in many sectors, local leaders reported to the Steering Committee for the Northwestern region at a meeting on August 22. Ho Chi Minh City wants to improve school meals


With students having meals at school, it is vital to improve the quality of the menus to ensure children's good health and improve their physical stature, experts have said. Nguyen Tai Dung, deputy head of the Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City Education and Training Department's school medicine division, said almost 561,000 students have lunch in the city's schools. Many schools face challenges in devising appropriate lunches to ensure nutrition and improve the condition of children with obesity or malnutrition, Dung said. Because of their lack of knowledge of nutrition, they serve poor food which does not meet the calorie or nutritional needs of the students, he added. A study of 400 primary schools by the HCM City Nutrition Centre found that only 6.2 percent of kitchen managers in schools have healthcare diplomas. Additional trains for national independence holiday

The Saigon Railway Passenger Transport Company will add five trains from Saigon to Nha Trang and vice versa to meet increasing travel demand during the national independence holiday from August 29th to September 2nd.
