August CPI rises 0.31 percent in southern hub

(CPV) - Ho Chi Minh city's consumer price index (CPI) in August rose by 0.31 percent against the same month last year, according to the city's statistics office.

The figure increased 1.26 percent compared to the start of the year, and 3.17 percent from one year previous. In August, the highest price hike went to the transport group at 1.24 percent. The restaurant and food service group saw a 0.19 percent CPI rise, in which food price surged 0.54 percent and CPI of foodstuff soared 0.22 percent. Other commodity groups with slight CPI rises were housing, electricity, water and fuel at 0.58 percent, alcohol and cigarettes at 0.28 percent, culture - entertainment and tourism at 0.28 percent, garments, hats and footwear at 0.19 percent, equipment and household appliances at 0.03 percent, goods and other services at 0.03 percent, and medicine and health service at 0.02 percent. Their meeting was co-held on Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh city by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ho Chi Minh city and the Saigon Economic Times ahead of the 19th round of TPP negotiations. The Cham ethnic groups in Vietnam

Numerous travel agencies join tourism stimulus programme

By August 18, nearly 70 travel agencies registered to participate in the 2013 travel demand stimulus programme launched by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

Through the programme, during the three months from May to July, the Ho Chi Minh city Tourism Association sold tours for nearly 10,000 customers to destinations of Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Da Nang, Hanoi and Hai Phong, a five fold increase against the same period last year. Pagoda displays unique stained glass pictures

Nhan Dan Online - Nearly 200 stained glass pictures, a unique art form of the southern region, are now on display at an exhibition, which opened on August 18 at the Xa Loi pagoda in Ho Chi Minh city. The colourful pictures are categorized on the basis of cultural influences such as ancestor worshipping, decoration, landscapes, congratulations, and pictures featuring Buddha and deities. According to collector Huynh Thanh Binh, over the past century, the art form has been robustly developed in Tien Giang, An Giang, Tra Vinh, and Soc Trang provinces and has become a popular artistic work of most families from the east to the west of the southern region. Vietnam Airlines operates new passenger terminal in Tuy Hoa civil airport

(CPV) - Starting August 20, the Vietnam national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines will operate a new passenger terminal on the east side of the new Tuy Hoa civil airport, Phu Thanh ward, Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province.

Staffs from Tuy Hoa branch of Vietnam Airlines, between August 20-31, are expected to assist passengers as best they can with check in & check out, luggage claim, and boarding services. Now the airline is operating 12 flights to/from Tuy Hoa airport weekly, including 5 flights on Hanoi - Tuy Hoa route and 7 flights on Ho Chi Minh city - Tuy Hoa route, using ATR72 aircraft (68 seats). All sections of this new passenger terminal such as hangers for three A320 and A321 aircraft, a drainage system, a lighting system and other related features, have been invested with around VND353 billion by the Southern Airports Corporation (SAC). Covering 3,800 square metres, it was built to meet 4C grade standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Tuy Hoa civil airport has been designed to serve 555,000 passengers per year, and cope with 300 passengers per hour at peak times. Vietnam's exports to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) see promising future as the region is now a potential market for Vietnamese farm produce, processed goods and equipment. The Department of African, West and South Asian Markets under the Ministry of Industry and Trade reported that two-way trade between Vietnam and the GCC, which groups Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), saw rapid growth, rising by more than 12.4 times from 392.4 million USD in 2003 to 4.87 billion USD in 2012. Last year, Vietnam earned 2.69 billion USD from exports to the GCC, an increase of 28.1 times from 95.6 million USD in 2003. The country imported 269.8 million USD worth of commodities from the region in 2003, rising by 7.3 times to hit 2.18 billion USD in 2012.
