Crackdown on smugglers creates border control turmoil A crackdown on smugglers has created turmoil at Vietnam-China border crossings, notably at Mong Cai Border Gate in Quang Ninh Province, which is being flooded with people going back and forth between the two countries as gangs probe for weak spots in border control. Officials said Mong Cai Border Gate processed 10,000 people on December 6. The crowdness has been going on over the past month following the arrest of a smuggling gang on November 2, which prompted an increase of inspections by border gate security along the border. … [Read more...]

On the afternoon of 11 November, Mr. Duong Anh Dien, Chairman of Haiphong People’s Committee received and worked with Mr. Nagai Katsuro - Envoy, Head of the Economic Board of the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam on ODA projects and Haiphong International Gateway Port. Mr Nagai Katsuro expressed his honor to the reception of Haiphong People’s Committee Chairman. He stated that he has taken over the mission at the Embassy for 2 months and this is his first visit in Haiphong. He was so glad to know that Haiphong has attracted many Japanese investment projects, including leading corporations. He believed that more and more Japanese companies will make investment in Haiphong in the future. The increasing inflow of Japanese investment in Haiphong is resulted from the determination of Japanese businesses and the great support of the city government, especially in infrastructure, the improvement of investment climate and services. On the morning of 29 October, at Haiphong City Convention Centre, Chairman of the city People’s Committee Duong Anh Dien received and worked with the business delegation of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) on their working visit to Haiphong to study about the city’s investment environment. Mr. Le Thanh Son, Vice Chairman and leaders of relevant departments and agencies also attended the reception. At the reception, representative of the delegation said JCCI has a large member network of 514 Chambers of Commerce with more than 1 million enterprises, more than 1 thousand of which have made investment in Vietnam. HCMC to spend VND4 trillion removing households on canals Ho Chi Minh City plans to spend VND 4 trillion (US$188,421,853) evacuating dilapidated houses which located along the canals to make city more beautiful. Hanoi authorities seize 20 iPhone 6 The Market Management Unit No 1 under Ha Noi's Market Management Department yesterday seized 20 iPhone 6 smartphones from a man living in Dai Kim commune of Hoang Mai district. The man, named Hoang Ba Thuc, did not have any papers to prove legal possession of the 20 smartphones, which are worth a total of VND 500 million. Thuc admitted that he had bought the phones from HCM City via express service in order to sell them illegally. Authorities uncover illegal timber trade Police in Thua Thien - Hue Province have uncovered cases of illegal logging of rare trees that are listed in Vietnamese Red Book of Endangered Species. The trees included Burma padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus), cho (Dipterocarpus retusus) son huyet (Melanorrhea laccifera), doi and chua. Exploitation, purchasing and transportation of these species are prohibited in Viet Nam. People's Court sentences three men for drug trafficking The Hoa Binh Province People's Court on Wednesday sentenced three men for drug trafficking. Ly A Thenh, 39, from the northern province of Dien Bien, was sentenced to death. Ly A Chu, 34, from the northern province of Son La, was sentenced to life imprisonment, while 25-year-old Boun Miher Khamtong from Laos' Houaphanh Province has been imprisoned for two years. The Dien Bien Police had been hunting for Thenh since 2006 for trafficking 700 grams of heroin. Thenh fled the province with his family and moved to Laos. Then he made a fake identity card, passport and driving licence and worked with a large drug trafficking ring operating in Laos and Viet Nam. … [Read more...]

Six sentenced to death in drug case The People's Court of Dien Bien yesterday sentenced to death six defendants in the biggest drug trafficking case in the northern province to date. According to the indictment, ten persons formed a network that transported more than 120 kilogrammes of heroin via Laos to Ha Noi and Lang Son en route to China, between November 2012 and May 2013.
