The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has helped the central city of Da Nang design an integrated development strategy for the city and its neighbouring areas. The Steering Committee of the Integrated Development Strategy for Da Nang City and its Neighbouring Areas (Dacriss) held its 6 th meeting in Da Nang on June 16 to hear reports by Dacriss research group. Dacriss, a technical project under the Japanese Government’s official development assistance programme, gave out potential and opportunities of economic development strategy for the city and its nearby areas. It also includes visions for the central region’s key economic area to become the environmental technology zone on the basis of economic development, ecological balance and national harmonisation. New railline discussed

The Steering Committee of the Integrated Development Strategy for DanangCity and Its Neighboring Areas (Dacriss) held its third meeting under the co-presidency of the Danang People's Committee and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). According to JICA, along with the Danang-Quang Ngai Highway being considered for investment by the Vietnamese government, the project to upgrade the railway connecting Danang and Hue must also be researched and considered in the coming time. On 7 August, vice-chairman of the Danang People's Committee Van Huu Chien met with Mr. Motonori Tsuno, chief-representative of the office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Viet Nam to discuss cooperative relạtions between Danang and JICA in the coming time. Mr. Motonori reported that the Integrated Development Strategy for DanangCity and Its Neighboring Areas (DACRISS) sponsored by JICA is making good progress thanks to the close cooperation of related agencies and bodies. He said he hopes that the results of this research will benefit the overall development and planning of Danang in the future and the city will have more specific projects. He said a senior volunteer of JICA is working at the DanangHospital to maintain the equipment funded by JICA. Japan supports 85 billion yen to develop Vietnam seaport This loan is mainly focused on seaport projects in Vietnam, of which are Lach Huyen port in Hai Phong and several projects related to traffic structure. The Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Yasuo Fujita, has proposed several measures to help the Vietnamese Government use official development assistance for public-private partnership (PPP) projects. At his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung in Hanoi on May 18, he pledged to do his utmost to intensify the two countries’ relations and share with the host specific mechanisms to boost the public-private partnership, particularly in infrastructure building. He also made recommendations to help speed up the progress of several JICA-funded projects in Vietnam. VGP – The Vietnamese Government will assign ministries and agencies to early ratify and implement the public-private partnership (PPP) model, affirmed Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung. Deputy Dung made the point on May 18 in Ha Noi while meeting with Mr. Yasuo Fujita, the Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Viet Nam. Honda plants 80 hectares of forest in Bac Kan

Honda Vietnam (HVN) will work with people in the northern province of Bac Kan to plant more than 80 hectares of forest this year, the fourth year in the HVN-sponsored forest-growing project in the province. On the fourth "Tree Planting Day" held on May 15, 1,500 trees were planted in an area of two hectares by some 200 HVN workers and locals. The event is part of the eight-year project (2013-2020) developed by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with consultancy from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and Vietnam Forestry University. According to HVN Deputy General Director Kiwamu Kayano, as a sole sponsor of the project, HVN provides 4.9 billion VND (219,600 USD) for greening 490 hectares of land in Nong Thuong and Xuat Hoa communes. The money covers the costs of project building, technical training for forestry officials and local farmers and the purchase of high-quality seedlings and fertilizer. A delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held working sessions with authorities of the northern province of Ha Giang on May 9-10 to discuss the implementation of a JICA-funded project on rural development. Takuy Nakagawa, head of the delegation, said the project is underway in Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Lai Chau and Son La provinces, with many sub-projects to be built in the six localities at the total construction cost of around 1.8 trillion VND (81 million USD). Ha Giang will carry out 18 sub-projects to build transport, irrigation and water-supplying facilities in Vi Xuyen, Bac Quang and Quang Binh districts, with a total cost of some 306 billion VND (13.77 million USD), he said. Vietnam still needs ODA for infrastructure development: economists

VietNamNet Bridge - While some analysts believe official development assistance (ODA) should be reduced, others believe that Vietnam still needs ODA capital for infrastructure development. The Project Management Unit No 1 has proposed that the Ministry of Transport approve a plan to use Japanese ODA capital for the VND17.2 trillion Tan Phu – Bao Loc Highway project. Nguyen Tri Hieu, a renowned economist, said Vietnam still cannot detach itself from ODA for three reasons. First, ODA is a good source of capital for infrastructure development. Second, ODA capital is cheaper than commercial loans. And third, the state budget still cannot fund huge projects. The expert went on to say that borrowing money for development is normal for economies. The UK has announced it will grant ODA to Vietnam from 2016. Japan helps Vietnam deal with cassava diseases

Vietnamese farmers will have the chance to access advanced technologies in cassava pest management and disease-free cassava cultivation through a Japanese supported project, which kicked off in Hanoi on May 4. According to director general of the Agricultural Genetics Institute Le Huy Ham, who is also the project director, the project will focus on detecting cassava pathogens, seeking suitable technical measures to diagnosing cassava diseases, developing disease-free cassava varieties and providing knowledge for the farmers. A laboratory to develop disease-free varieties to meet domestic as well as Asian demands is included in the project, Ham said. Cassava diseases, especially the witches’ broom disease, are posing great threats to yields, President of the Vietnam Cassava Association Nguyen Van Lang highlighted. Airlines, coach operators to add services on holiday Airlines as well as coach and train services operators will increase services during the long holiday of Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1) to meet rising demand. Vietjet said it will operate 140 more flights from on April 28 to May 4, bringing the total daily services to 246, up a staggering 66% against the same period last year. The no-frills carrier will add four flights a day to the HCMC-Danang run and two daily services to each of HCMC-Phu Quoc, Hanoi-Phu Quoc and Hanoi-Danang routes. (VOVworld)- Water puppetry is a typical artistic genre in the Red River Delta. It is closely associated with Vietnam’s wet rice civilization. Bo Duong village, Hong Phong commune, Hai Duong province is one of the cradles that nurture this folk art. Elders in Bo Duong village say it’s hard to tell when water puppetry first appeared. But carvings on the Bo Duong communal house which feature Uncle Teu, fairy dances, martial art fighting, and squirrel climbing tree – the characters in water puppetry- give a clue that this folk art appeared in the 17th century. In front of the communal house is a small pond where water puppetry performances take place. Local carpenters created different puppets with different expressions. Pham Van Tong, head of the Water Puppetry Troupe in Hong Phong commune says that after several years of fading out due to wars and economic difficulties, water puppetry in the village revived in 1989.
