New railline discussed

The Steering Committee of the Integrated Development Strategy for DanangCity and Its Neighboring Areas (Dacriss) held its third meeting under the co-presidency of the Danang People's Committee and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). According to JICA, along with the Danang-Quang Ngai Highway being considered for investment by the Vietnamese government, the project to upgrade the railway connecting Danang and Hue must also be researched and considered in the coming time. On 7 August, vice-chairman of the Danang People's Committee Van Huu Chien met with Mr. Motonori Tsuno, chief-representative of the office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Viet Nam to discuss cooperative relạtions between Danang and JICA in the coming time. Mr. Motonori reported that the Integrated Development Strategy for DanangCity and Its Neighboring Areas (DACRISS) sponsored by JICA is making good progress thanks to the close cooperation of related agencies and bodies. He said he hopes that the results of this research will benefit the overall development and planning of Danang in the future and the city will have more specific projects. He said a senior volunteer of JICA is working at the DanangHospital to maintain the equipment funded by JICA. On 16 June, the Steering Committee of the Integrated Development Strategy for DanangCity and Its Neighboring Areas (Dacriss) held its third meeting under the co-presidency of vice-chairman of the Danang People's Committee Van Huu Chien and Mr. Yoshifumi Omura, senior representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Representatives of the consultancy board and research team of JICA, the World Bank, research institutes, People's Committees of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh and relevant agencies of Danang participated. Cambodia sees rise in enterprises

Cambodia currently has 513,759 enterprises, an 11 percent rise from 463,360 firms in 2011, according to the 2014 Cambodia Intercensal Economic Survey (CIES). The firms are employing as many as 1.87 million labourers, it said. Its capital, Phnom Penh, has 97,200 companies within its boundaries, followed by Kampong Cham with 54,231, Kandal with 38,679, Siem Reap with 37,622, and Takeo with 32,780. The number of enterprises employing over 100 employees rose 14 percent from 2011, according to the survey, attributed to businesses shifting their investments to the agriculture, industry and service sectors. Leaders from the Ministry of Health along with representatives from Kansai Medical University and the International Medical Society of Japan agreed to share experiences among medical workers, nurses and students. They also agreed to strengthen the exchange of lecturers and research workers, build cooperative research programmes and bolster bilateral cooperation among hospitals, research institutes and universities. Japanese loan to help Da Nhim power plant

Da Nhim-Ham Thuan–Da Mi hydropower JSC started expanding Da Nhim Hydro Power Plant on February 10. – VNA Photo Ngoc Ha NINH THUAN (Biz Hub) – Power Generation Corporation 1 (Genco 1) and Da Nhim-Ham Thuan–Da Mi hydropower joint-stock company on February 10 launched the Da Nhim hydropower plant expansion in the southern province. The investment capital for the project is estimated to be more than VND1.9 trillion (US$92 million), of which the investor's funds are VND300 billion ($14 million), while the rest is a loan granted by the Japanese government and disbursed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). According to Chairman and General Director of the power company Nguyen Trong Oanh, the Da Nhim power plant will have a new turbine of 80MW, increasing the plant's capacity from 160MW to 240MW. Ho Chi Minh City sewage treatment factory gets upgrade

Ho Chi Minh City and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) began work on the upgrade of a sewage treatment factory in Binh Chanh district on February 7. The project has a total investment of 2.8 trillion VND (133 million USD), including the construction of a sewage treatment area, mud treatment zone and electrical supply system. Under the project, the Binh Hung sewage treatment factory’s capacity will increase almost three times, from the current 141,000 cu.m per day and night to 469,000 cu.m, ensuring the treatment of waste water discharged from districts 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 11 and reducing water pollution in the Tau Hu-Ben Nghe canal. Construction is expected to take 54 months. Construction of gas processing plant begins PM Nguyen Tan Dung on Saturday attended a ceremony to start construction of a gas processing plant in the southernmost province of Ca Mau. The plant, part of the Ca Mau Gas-Electricity-Fertiliser Complex, is designed to process 6.2 million cubic meters of natural gas taken from gas fields in the south-western region on a daily basis. Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway opens

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung cut the ribbon to officially open the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway on February 8, which is expected to help ease traffic congestion, reduce transport cost and time, and promote trade between Ho Chi Minh City and its vicinities. The 55-kilometre highway connecting National Highway 51 and north-south National Highway 1A has eight lanes, a maximum vehicle speed of 80-120 kilometres per hour, and an initial construction cost of 20.63 trillion VND (970 million USD). The highway was funded by the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)’s official development assistance (ODA), and the Government of Vietnam. VGP – PM Nguyen Tan Dung on Sunday attended the launching ceremony of the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway, about one year ahead of the planned duration. The 55 km expressway has the total investment capital of US$1 billion, jointly funded by Viet Nam, the Asian Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The project was divided into two subprojects. The first 20-km section of the expressway, which links the Vietnamese southern hub with its neighboring Dong Nai province, was put into operation in August last year. The second section links the city’s belt road 2 and Dau Giay in the neighboring province of Dong Nai was designed for vehicles to travel at 100 kph. The entire expressway will help shorten travel time from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Nai from the current three hours down to just one hour. Nhat Tan Bridge – the Symbol of Vietnamese and Japanese Friendship

The Nhat Tan Bridge was built with Japan’s Official Development Assistance and the Vietnamese Government’s reciprocal capital. It is of great economic, political and social significance as it connects Hanoi to industrial parks in the north and helps reduce the distance from the capital city to Noi Bai International Airport. When put into operation in January 2015, the Nhat Tan Bridge, which has a total length of 8.95km and a width of 33.2m with four lanes and pedestrian sidewalks, will become a cable-stayed bridge with the largest number of spans in Southeast Asia. Tu Giang The ODA disbursements are made clear in a report by the Ministry of Planning and Investment. They included US$5.25 billion in ODA loans and US$350 million in grants. Around US$2.5 billion of the total was disbursed for basic construction projects. The report said major international donors continued maintaining high disbursements with US$1.773 billion from Japan via the Japan International Cooperation Agency, US$1.386 billion from the World Bank and more than US$1 billion from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The major ODA-funded projects put into use last year included the Nhat Tan bridge and road, the second passenger terminal T2 at Noi Bai International Airport and Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway. National biodiversity database system official launched

On January 27, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has officially launched the national biodiversity database system (NBDS). The database system was jointly developed by the Biodiversity Conservation Agency (BCA), the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), through the "Development of the NBDS" project cooperated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) since November 2011. NBDS is designed correspondingly to international standards to store nation-wide biodiversity data including lists of species of fauna and flora in taxonomy. Thanks to this, BCA will effectively implement management on biodiversity by gathering necessary data for assessing, monitoring and reporting the status of biodiversity. Vietnam speeds up ODA disbursements in 2014

(VOV) - The National Steering Committee for ODA and Preferential Loans on February 3 met with six development banks to assess and devise a plan to accelerate ODA-funded projects and programmes for the upcoming year. The six banks included the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank (WB), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Korea Eximbank, KfW-Germany and AFD-France. According to a committee report, Vietnam attracted total ODA and preferential loans of more than US$4.362 billion in 2014. Over 70% of the funds were used to develop infrastructure Japan disbursed the most ODA atUS$1.773 billion, followed by the WB at US$1.386 billion and ADB atUS$1.058 billion.
