Ore mining rights in four areas to be auctioned

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment officially approved a plan on putting up for auction the ore mining rights at four sites, the first bidding event of its kind in 2015. Bidders will be invited to vie for the right to mine iron ore at Khe Bang in Tan Son district, northern Phu Tho province; metacacbonat (stone for construction and decoration) at Suoi Giang commune in Van Chan district, northern Yen Bai province; gold in Xa Khia in Le Thuy district, central Quang Binh province; and fluorit in Binh Duong in Nguyen Binh district, northern mountainous Cao Bang province. Vietnamese photographer listed in famous photo book Nick Ut, whose "Napalm girl" picture shocked the whole world, has been listed in a photo book "Behind Photographs" of Tim Mantoani. American photographer Tim Mantoani tracked down the talent behind some of the world's most iconic photographs and got them to sit for portraits. According to a famous website International Business Times, he used a soon-to-be-extinct photographic medium – the 20×24 Polaroid. Over a five-year period, he took large format Polaroids of more than 150 photographers. Vietnamese, Cambodian provinces partner in military cooperation The military headquarters of Vietnam’s southern province of Tay Ninh and the Cambodian province of Tbong-Khmum signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on military cooperation on February 5. Authorities bust traffickers for transporting firecrackers Several individuals were caught transporting forbidden commodities over the past few days, alerting authorities to the worsening problem of trafficking during the days approaching Tet (lunar new year). Bus fare reductions for holiday travellers Following decreases in fuel prices, Ho Chi Minh City’s bus fares during the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year festival) are expected to drop by 7 to 20 from last year, unveiled the municipal Ministry of Transport on January 22. According to agency statistics, 110 of 130 operators in the Mien Tay bus station and 115 of 214 operators in the Mien Dong station have reduced transport fares thus far. Only five operators have announced their intent to increase their ticket costs for some routes. Currently, the industry is experiencing increased demand on the people’s travel as the holiday season quickly approaches. On January 4, petrol prices were cut by 1,900 VND per litre, the second reduction this month. The price of RON 95 was down to 16,270 VND while the prices of RON 92 and bio-fuel E5 were reduced to 15,670 VND. VGP – The PM has agreed to supplement VND319.699 billion to launch a forest inventory and supervision project in 25 provinces in the 2014-2015 phase. Of which, VND200 billion will be allocated from the State budget in 2014 for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) (VND30.778 billion), the Ministry of Public Security (VND1.784 billion) and 21 provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho, Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Binh Thuan (VND167.438 billion). VND119.699 billion will be arranged from the State budget in 2015 for the MARD. Fishing boat rescued near Truong Sa A fishing boat and its 13 crew members were rescued at sea near Viet Nam's Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands after sending an SOS on Wednesday. The boat's crew belongs to Ly Son Island's An Hai Commune in the central province of Quang Ngai. S.Korea firm to sue workers for loss-causing strike Striking workers at a South Korean-invested firm in HCM City will be sued for losses caused to the company. Some 800 workers at Carimax Sai Gon Ltd. Co. went on strike January 3 after the company declined to pass on a mandated rise in minimum wages. Company officials said on January 12 that workers who failed to carry out their duties for five consecutive days would be sacked and sued for losses incurred by the company. Carimax said trade union intervention had failed to resolve the strike. The government decreed last year minimum wages would rise by VND250,000-400,000 (USD11.9-USD19) a month, depending on region, from January 1, 2015. But on December 27, the board of directors at Carimax said that because of 2014 losses, the pay rise would be determined according to each worker's attitude, capability and experiences. Health authority tests strange snail to verify cause of fishermen’s deaths The Department of Food Safety in the central province of Ha Tinh sent the snail, that caused the deaths of three fishermen on January 5, to the Ministry of Health’s Food Administration of Vietnam. Dr. Phan Van Hung, head of the Department of Food Safety, yesterday said that his department will test the snails to verify soon the deaths of the three fishermen.
