Vietnam aims for stronger economic ties with Middle East, North Africa

Nhan Dan/VNA - The Vietnamese Government hopes the economic co-operation forum with its Middle Eastern and North African partners can enhance the friendship and co-operation between Vietnam and these countries. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made the statement while addressing the first ever such forum in Hanoi on November 4. He stated that Vietnam and Middle Eastern and North African countries have great advantages and potential that can complement each other through mutual co-operation and development. Lam Kinh named Special National Heritage Site

Nhan Dan Online - Lam Kinh historical site in Xuan Lam commune, Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province, was announced as a Special National Heritage Site on September 26. The provincial People's Committee held a ceremony to receive a certificate honouring this fact which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a ceremony on September 19 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the inaugural visit of former Cuban President Fidel Castro to the battlefield in the central province of Quang Tri. Addressing the event, Deputy PM Phuc recalled the visit by President Fidel Castro in 1973, saying it gave courage to the Vietnamese people and soldiers fighting against US troops in 1975. Deputy PM Phuc said the visit was politically significant in Vietnam's history, as President Castro had been the first foreign leader to visit Vietnam soon after the early independence of the North. Seminar discusses Phu Quoc development

PM urges Dong Thap for rapid development

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the southern province of Dong Thap to better utilise its farming and aquaculture resources to achieve more rapid and sustainable development. Working with key provincial officials in Cao Lanh city on September 10, PM Dung said the province should lessen the acreage of rice and alternatively raise more produce that is in higher demand both at home and abroad, and better utilise technological advances to improve output. He told the province that it should help farmers and packaging firms improve both the quality and design of produce, especially key export items such as rice, seafood and fruit. The leader also appealed for increased investment in basic construction, which he said will generate more jobs. Vietnam, RoK to increase labour co-operation

The Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labour (MOEL) held a seminar in Hanoi on September 9 to discuss labour and employment co-operation. They agreed that experts from both ministries would negotiate for earlier signing of a special Memorandum of Understanding between them. Museum receives artifacts on President Ho Chi Minh

Nhan Dan - Nearly 230 artifacts, documents and photos on Uncle Ho were presented to the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Ho Chi Minh City on August 27. The artifacts include a Movado watch that Uncle Ho presented to Ministry of Justice Vu Dinh Hoe; a 'Hero' pen, a gift of President Ho to Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Railway Administration, Le Minh Duc; and five portraits of President Ho drawn by prisoners in Con Dao prison from 1964 to 1971. There are also photos depicting Uncle Ho and soldiers from the southern region during their visit to the north in 1967, and the national leader at the Vietnam Embassy in Moscow in 1960. The donated items had been preserved by 21 individuals and collectives for many years as valuables of their families. Since 2010, the museum has received nearly 700 artifacts relating to life and career of President Ho. Two-hundred maps and other documents of Vietnam, China and some Western countries will be exhibited in Ho Chi Minh City, affirming that Vietnam has for long established and exercised its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes. The exhibition, named "Hoang Sa, Truong Sa of Vietnam and historical evidence" is being held at the Reunification Palace on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street from August 22-29. The reproduction of several documents in Han (Chinese), Nom (Chinese-transcribed Vietnamese) Scripts and Vietnamese issued by Vietnamese imperial governments from the 17th to early 20th century will also be on display, according to media reports. Meeting seeks to develop atomic power sector human resources

Nhan Dan - Measures to improve the country's atomic power were discussed on July 23 in Hanoi at a meeting of the National Steering Committee on Developing Human Resources for the Atomic Energy Sector. Deputy PM works with Soc Trang province

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh on July 16 attended a working session with the southwestern province of Soc Trang's officials to discuss its socio-economic development in the first half of 2013 and the implementation of its new rural construction programme. In the reviewed period, Soc Trang's rate of GDP growth was 8.75%, a slight increase from the 8.34% recorded in the first six months of 2012, Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Trung Hieu reported at the session. The province's estimated rice output is expected to exceed 2.2 million tonnes this year due to its large-scale field model, which expanded to include 12,500 hectares and 8,400 farming households, Hieu added. The Vietnamese Government will spare no effort to work together with the German side to develop the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) into a high quality training institute in Vietnam. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan made the statement at a reception for the council of the Ho Chi Minh City-based VGU, which was led by Udo Corts, the former Minister for Science and the Arts of the federal state of Hessen, in Hanoi on July 10. Showing his delight at the university's new developments, Deputy PM Nhan said he expects that VGU would help Vietnamese students land jobs at German enterprises operating in Vietnam in addition to its main task of teaching German. Government reviews socio-economic situation in first half of 2013

The Government announced this assessment in Hanoi on June 27 during its regular meeting to review the country's socio-economic development in the first six months of this year, which was chaired by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. According to a report by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, industrial production, services and businesses saw positive signs of recovery in the first half of 2013.
