Recent scientific studies have confirmed high biodiversity of Khanh Hoa forest and proposed conservation and development measures. In addition high biodiversity of Khanh Hoa forest was reaffirmed in the research themed “Building biodiversity database of Khanh Hoa forest” carried out in two years 2012 to 2013 by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment shall assume, Southern Institute of Ecology ( Ho Chi Minh City ) in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
According to the research, Khanh Hoa ecosystem is characterized as tropical and subtropical with abundant and diverse flora species. In addition, dry forest ecosystems and mangroves also serve as typical features of Khanh Hoa forest. The number of flora species is estimated at 2,142, of which about 100 species are newly recorded. Well-known floras of the forest include agarwood, Paph. Delenatii, which is bred in many developing countries and had been thought as extinct until found in Khanh Vinh. Recently, Vanilla planifolia in Khanh Hoa, which accounts for 5/6 Vanilla species in Vietnam, has drawn much attention of researchers. Cam Ranh Peninsula has 2 unique genetic resources of Vietnam and the world, namely Shorea falcata and Hopea cordata. Meanwhile, Ducampopinus Krempfii is recorded to allocate in new areas in Khanh Hoa. At Hon Heo, scientists have examined 1 extraordinary Pinus species that holds many differences compared to the Pinus populations in Ba Cum ( Khanh Son ). This is a rare genetic resource that should be researched and developed.
Up to now, there have been 50 species of endemic genetic resources named after locations and individuals in Khanh Hoa, including orchid Yangbay Hung, Oak Yersin … Especially, in the past 2 years, domestic and international researchers have discovered and announced eight new species, including 5 species in the area of Hon Ba Nature Reserve: Gie, Giom, Minh Dien, Nam Tinh… So far, 2142 flora species of 235 families have been; of which 77 are rare species listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam. Floras in Khanh Hoa forest are diverse and valuable, providing timber, spice and pharmaceutical.
Besides, there are 507 animal species of 112 families, including 42 species of reptiles, 41 amphibian inhabiting in Khanh Hoa forest, of which 9 rare species distribute in almost all forested areas in the province. With these initial results, Khanh Hoa province is considered as an important locality in the conservation of rare animals, especially primates.
As stated by Dr.Vu Ngoc Long – Director of the Institute of Ecology South, at the present, socio-economic planning and hydropower development will impact significantly on the resources and the biodiversity of the forest in Khanh Hoa. Hence the province needs to put forward solutions to the preservation and development of the forest.
According Engineer Tran Gioi – Forestry Department , Department of Agriculture and Rural Development: The pivotal objective is to review and supplement the planning of Special Use forests. Also, Mr. Tran Gigi recommended turning two potential areas of high biodiversity (Son Thai – Giang Ly and Hon Heo) into natural reserve and Conservation area of habitats and species as well as improving and developing mangroves. Furthermore, the areas adjacent to Khanh Vinh district and National Park Chu Yang Sinh ( Dak Lak ) and Bidoup Nui Ba ( Lam Dong ) and the area bordering Khanh Son district and Phuoc Binh National Park ( Ninh Thuan ) are recommended to be built into biodiversity corridor. Also as said by Mr.Tran Gioi, the provincial authorities and relevant departments need to carry out conservation program of 77 species listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam and the world as well as primates step by step construct the database of Khanh Hoa forest biodiversity as a basis for development of the forest creatures…
