Three years after being recognised by UNESCO as a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks, and strongly supported and guided by the Government, ministries, central and provincial agencies and intensively engaged by the local authorities and ethnic peoples in the heritage area, Dong Van Karst Plateau has achieved many positive results in its construction and development.
Up to now, the Government of Vietnam has approved the master plan to preserve, restore and promote the value of the Dong Van Karst Plateau in the 2012 to 2020 period, and has made plans towards 2030. The image of the Dong Van Karst Plateau has reached more and more people, helping raise the public awareness and gain benefits from the tourism development, thus improving the lives of local people. Some activities related to the preservation and renovation of the cultural heritage, geology, and biodiversity have been focused on. Advocacy and education activities to raise public awareness are closely adopted in various forms such as materials design systems, publications, posters, billboards, and other communication activities reached out to the community, teachers and students. The Information Centre of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Management Board has been designed to help reserve, manage and promote the values of the Dong Van Karst Plateau.
Mr Sen Chin Ly, Director of the Steering Committee for the construction and development of Dong Van Karst Plateau, said in the upcoming time, the UNESCO delegation will come and carry out the re-evaluation of the Dong Van Karst Plateau; however, many of the recommended criteria of UNESCO have not been fulfilled. Therefore, to keep pace with expected progress, the committee only focuses on the key issues such as re-organisation of the advocacy activities, decentralisation activities from the province to the grassroots, development of the infrastructure system related to the transportation, restaurants, hotels and featured tourist products, planning and allocation of investment in facilities at a number of heritage spots, development of the information centre in the area, and provisions of the billboards and posters in heritage spots. Ha Giang province has requested the Management Board of the Dong Van Karst Plateau and the Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to review and coordinate with other local service organisations in the area to introduce and highlight the values of the cuisine and medicinal plants in the area. The Ha Giang Province People’s Committee has also requested the provincial Department of Construction to coordinate with the investors to submit the final approved projects related to the construction plans as well as detailed plans to build four functional areas. This helps soon complete the national master plan for the outline development plan for a national tourism centre.
In the review conference after 3 years of the construction and development of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, Provincial Party General Secretary Trieu Tai Vinh praised the achievements of the industry and the members of the Steering Committee. He said that other related agencies need to actively achieve the goals set in the master plan and drastically improve the advocacy activities to deal with the practices of each locality and each ethnic group in the region. This will be considered the basis for strategic objectives to develop tourism in Dong Van Karst Plateau and accordingly, build Dong Van Karst Plateau as a strong brand. General Secretary Trieu Tai Vinh proposed that the Steering Committee and other departments, as well as four districts in the heritage area, should identify any shortcomings and propose feasible solutions.
