(VEN) – The Ministry of Industry and Trade together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Embassy of Norway in Vietnam presented the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Systems (SPS) on October 1 in Hanoi to help business understand the unity between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Union (EU) in terms of the SPS.
Tran Trung Thuc, the Head of the Vietnam-EFTA Free Trade Agreement Negotiation Team, said that the EFTA currently has four official members, including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The EFTA is small but dynamic and includes Switzerland and Norway, which are Vietnam’s potentially large export markets.
Apart from general regulations on the EFTA’s SPS, experts presented specific processes for exports to EFTA countries, including animals (meat and seafood), plants (cereals, vegetables and fruits), processed food and medicines.
Vietnam carried out the first negotiation round on a free trade agreement with the EFTA at the end of May 2012. So far, the two parties have undergone five negotiation rounds on the agreement, involving trade in goods and services, investment and other areas./.
