VietNamNet Bridge – In the afternoon of August 7, while watching the 6th storm on the coast of Do Son, Hai Phong city, a 16-year-old boy was washed away by big waves.
The odd accident occred at 4.30pm yesterday, at the beach in front of Hai Yen Hotel, Do Son District. Hearing that the Mangkhut storm would affect Hai Phong, Pham Thanh Son, 16, from Ngo Quyen district, Hai Phong city and three friends drove motorcycles to Do Son beach to watch the storm.
At the above address, four boys stopped to watch waves. Son ran close to the embankment and he was suddenly swept into the sea by big waves.
Nguyen Huu Khanh, one in the group, said when Son was standing on the embankments, waves rose very high. Suddenly a 7m tall wave swept him to the sea. “Son could only speak just two words ‘help me’ and then sank,” Khanh said.
He said the group then called for others to help. They intended to use a rope to move from the embankment to the sea to search for their friend but they were prevented by the police because it was too dangerous.
Mr. Ha Viet Hung, chief police of Van Son Ward, Do Son District, said after receiving the report of the incident, the police force informed the sea rescue forces but with small boats and big waves, the rescue work failed.
Hung said all local police officers were mobilized to prevent locals from going to the beach to watch the storm. The victim has not been found yet.
