VietNamNet Bridge – Police in Dau Tieng District in southeastern Binh Duong Province will prosecute Tran Tan Phong, the 51-year-old owner of a local timber workshop for allegedly detaining his employees illegally.
One of the employees who attempted to escape is said to have died while swimming across a lake adjacent to the workshop.
According to Major Ho Van Dung, deputy head of the district police, Phong will be held in jail for three months during the continued investigation.
Phong has been accused of abusing his employees by forcibly confining them behind locked doors. He is also reported to have taken their mobile phones to keep them from contacting people.
The accused is also said to have watched them through camera videos.
Two employees attempted to escape by crossing a nearby lake. One of them, 25-year-old Bo Son Rot from Soc Trang Province died during the swim on May 26.
Le Thanh Cung, chairman of Binh Duong Province People’s Committee has requested police and the district People’s Committee to urgently investigate the alleged wrongdoings and clarify the responsibilities of the local authorities in the case.
