Shopkeepers in Dong Xuan market mobilized to use paper bags (Photo: VNA)(CPV) – In order to communicate to all people the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment, thereby raising awareness of the units, organizations and individuals of environmental protection, Hanoi directs the departments, sectors, districts and related agencies to promote the implementation of a program restricting the use of plastic bags, for the sake of the environment, and replacing them with environment friendly bags in daily life.
Under the plan, from now until the end of the year, Hanoi will focus on directly communicating to pupils of primary schools and students of universities at six locations of Nam Thanh Cong primary school, Hoang Dieu primary school, Dich Vong A primary school, Foreign Trade University, National Economics University and University of Transport and Communications.
At the locations, pupils and students will be introduced to and offered environment friendly bags which can replace non-biodegradable plastic bags.
The Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment is assigned as the president to promote communication and raise awareness in the community, through TV channels, radio and newspapers, about the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment, and the content and practical significance of the program so people will voluntarily respond to the program.
From September 10 to November 14, hundreds of banners, slogans and posters will be hung in densely populated areas and 10,000 environmentally friendly synthetic fabric bags will be delivered at primary schools and universities.
In the series of activities of restricting the use of plastic bags, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in collaboration with the Hanoi Women’s Union will mobilize women to use environment friendly bags, and use paper bags to replace for nylon bags for garbage to promote the natural biological degrading of waste.
Hanoi also successfully implements the pilot program on restricting the use of plastic bags for environment at Hapro Mart supermarket system, which helps people be fully aware of the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment, and promotes the habit of limiting nylon and using environment friendly bags.
According to environmental experts, the life cycle of plastic bags extends for centuries, however throwing a nylon bag takes less than a second, but it takes 500 – 1,000 years for it to naturally disintegrate. The nylon bag containing food will be contaminated because it contains metals such as lead, which is harmful for brain and cause lung cancer, birth defects for infants./.
