(VEN) – By taking practical and timely measures to mitigate its negative impacts on the environment, Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company under the Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) over recent years has been praised as a leading open-cast coal exploiters in terms of environmental protection.
From good awareness
As a open-cast coal exploiter with relatively high output, the operation of Cao Son Coal JSC has caused bad impacts on the environment.
At present, Cao Son Coal JSC is operating a traditional production line in exploiting coal, including exploding a coal mine, breaking up rocks and soil by drilling-machines and taking off rocks and soil by a excavator – truck system and transporting coal. Coal will be sorted out before transported for consumption.
Although this is a quite synchronous production line, Deputy Director of Cao Son Coal JSC Dang Van Tung said, “to ensure an efficient exploitation process, save resources and reduce to the minimum impacts on the environment, over the past years, the old exploiting equipment and transporting vehicles have been gradually replaced by new modern ones from advanced countries.”
Particularly, being aware of the importance of environmental protection, the company has formed an Environment Department with growing expenses year by year. Cao Son Coal JSC also pays attention to launching propaganda programs to improve awareness and knowledge relating to environmental protection.
Every year, Cao Son Coal JSC coordinates with the local authorities to organize a meeting in response to the World Environment Day (June 5) and hold various activities to propagandize about environment-related issues such as hanging up banderols and posters and update new regulations on environmental protection for the staff in charge.
To proper actions
Like many other open-cast coal exploiters, during coal production, Cao Son Coal JSC took the initiative in collecting toxic wastes and temporarily storing them in warehouses or water containers before transferring to transporters who will make sure they will not spread to the environment and affect workers’ health. Only in 2012, the company collected a total number of hazardous wastes of 450,865 kilograms including discharged lubricating oil, batteries and clouts.
As for solid wastes, Cao Son Coal JSC equipped roadwork and workshops with specialized dustbins and vehicles for storage and collection. In 2012, the company treated up to 682,000 kg of solid wastes.
|In 2012, the total expenses on environmental protection activities of Cao Son Coal JSC was nearly VND88 billion. Of this figure, expenses on environmental protection at the company was nearly VND16 billion while doing State’s duty was over VND37 billion, depositing nearly VND35 billion for improvements of environmental conditions and treating wastewater nearly VND272 million./.|
Particularly, to limit impacts on the environment at the maximum level, the company adopted technological measures such as using mine explosion and drilling technologies to break up rocks and soil, improve the road surface for coal transportation to reduce shakes and noise. The efforts of Cao Son Coal JSC was recognized as the 2012 environmental monitoring results showed that the company environment criteria was within the allowable limits.
2013 continues to be a tough year for the coal industry in general, however, Cao Son Coal JSC still spends VND16.5 billion on environmental protection (nearly one more billion than 2012), of this VND12.5 billion is for preventing environmental incidents and the remaining VND4 billion is for environmental monitoring and measuring, propaganda and education programs and wastes collection and treatment./.
