Vietnam vying for UNESCO WHC’s membership

(VOV) – The UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC) opened its 37th session in Cambodia on June 16.

Nguyen Quoc Hung, Deputy Head of the National Cultural Heritage Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the meeting provides a good chance for Vietnam to share experience, take advantage of international community support to preserve heritage sites and prepare profiles for new heritage sites to get approval.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, who is president of the 37th WHC session, said the meeting will consider and acknowledge the Outstanding Universal Value of Cultural World Heritage.

It will also reconsider preserving the recognized heritage sites and decided which ones are of risk of being removed from the list of world heritage sites.

In addition, participants will discuss international assistance managed by by World Heritage Fund. The WHC including 21 members will talk about the world cultural and natural heritage situation to decide which ones can be added to the list.

The meeting which has gathered around 1,300 delegates from 120 countries will close in Siem Reap on June 27.
